Business was not easy for women in Saudi Arabia in the early 2000s, when Sahar Hamad Al Marzouki established Al Faris International School. But Al Marzouki overcame each obstacle with her dedication to giving students a quality education. Despite the lack of support at the time, she built a thriving school. Al Faris International is now an IB World School, accredited by the International Baccalaureate. The school has 2,275 students enrolled.

Reflecting on her journey, Al Marzouki recalls the difficulties she faced two decades ago, when there was little support compared to today. The change in the environment for women in education shows the progress made in Saudi Arabia. She says the unexpected support from the government and His Royal Highness was a dream come true.

She spoke about a few achievements that she is proud of. Securing full authorization for Al Faris International School as an IB World School for its primary years, middle years, and diploma programs is one of them. Another is that Al Faris International was the first international school in the city of Al-‘Ula. When the COVID-19 pandemic posed challenges around the world, Al Marzouki and her team successfully made the shift to online learning, keeping their students’ education going.

Although online learning has its strengths, Al Marzouki still believes nothing can replace in-person schooling, especially for lower elementary students. Looking ahead, she sees a hybrid approach, combining online and face-to-face learning. In line with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, Al Marzouki remains committed to giving boys and girls across the kingdom the best learning experience.
